Early retirement, or FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early), is more than just accumulating a certain amount of money. It’s about designing a life you love and having the financial freedom to pursue it.

To achieve a life built on your terms, it’s crucial to define clear lifestyle goals that align with your vision of early retirement.

Your ideal lifestyle probably won’t match mine, and it might change over time, but the idea is to gain the freedom to choose, regardless of your priorities at the time. The key to long-term success is in clearly defining and understanding your end game when it comes to lifestyle goals. This will help you stay motivated, and it will help clarify the path forward.

In this article, we’ll discuss how you can build clear goals to support an early retirement that is ideal for you, your lifestyle, priorities, and aspirations.

#176 How to Build Lifestyle Goals for Early Retirement

Financial Freedom and Early Retirement

What does your ideal lifestyle and day to day look like? Financial freedom is the flexibility to choose what you do with your time, on your terms.

Financial freedom provides the power to retire early (or not), explore a different career, pursue passions, travel, or spend more time with loved ones.

You might already have a perfect vision in mind for what financial freedom and early retirement mean for you, or you might be figuring it out. Either way, it’s important to start your journey with deep reflection.

As you begin to build your lifestyle goals, reflect on the following:

  • What activities bring you joy and fulfillment? Which ones do you want to pursue?
  • What kind of daily routine do you envision? What would a perfect day look like to you if you had no obligations?
  • Where do you envision living, and what kind of community do you desire?
  • What relationships do you want to nurture and prioritize?
  • What passions and hobbies will you prioritize?
  • Does your legacy matter? If so, what legacy do you want to leave behind and what activities will you align alongside it?

Building Your Personalized Lifestyle Goals for Early Retirement

As you refine your lifestyle goals, follow the steps below to take the questions above to a deeper level:

  1. Brainstorm Your Passions and Interests: Reflect on the the activities that genuinely bring you joy and happiness. Which of these activities make you feel alive and fulfilled? List everything, no matter how big or small.
  2. Envision Your Ideal Day: Imagine a typical day in your early retirement. What does it look like? Where do you wake up? What activities do you engage in? Who are you with? Journal out your perfect day.
  3. Consider Your Relationships: Reflect on how early retirement will impact your relationships with family and friends. How do you want to nurture these connections? Write down the connections that matter most to you, and how you want to continue nurturing them.
  4. Think About Your Purpose: Imagine the impact you want to have on the world. What will give your life meaning and purpose once you’re no longer working for a paycheck? Will you volunteer, pursue creative endeavors, mentor others, or do something else entirely? List 2-5 potential activities that align with your purpose.
  5. Factor in Your Health and Well-being: Reflect on the activities that will allow you to support your physical and mental health in early retirement. Will you focus on exercise, healthy eating, meditation, or stress reduction techniques? List at least one activity to support your physical and mental health each.
  6. Estimate the Costs: Once you have a clearer picture of your desired lifestyle, start to estimate the potential costs associated with your activities, housing, healthcare, and travel. This will help you refine your FIRE number. Read the “Beyond the Numbers” section to learn how to calculate your FIRE number.

Exploring Different Paths to Early Retirement and Their Lifestyle Implications

The article “Top Ways to Retire Early: Strategies for Financial Freedom” explores various paths to achieving FIRE. Whether you resonate with Safety Cushion FIRE, Lean FIRE, Fat FIRE, or another approach, your lifestyle goals should inform your financial strategy.

For example, if your early retirement vision involves living in a high-cost-of-living area, extensive travel and/or luxurious experiences, you might lean towards Fat FIRE. In which case, you’ll need a more aggressive savings and investment plan.

However, if you prefer a minimalist lifestyle or even a digital nomad lifestyle, Lean FIRE might be a better fit.

Traditional FIRE Approaches to Early Retirement

  • Lean FIRE: Often requires a more frugal lifestyle in early retirement, focusing on essential expenses and potentially simpler living arrangements. Your lifestyle goals might center around outdoor activities, hobbies that don’t require significant spending, and strong community connections.
  • Fat FIRE: Allows for a more comfortable and potentially luxurious lifestyle in early retirement, with more room for travel, dining out, and pursuing expensive hobbies. Your lifestyle goals might involve frequent travel, owning multiple properties, and/or engaging in high-cost recreational activities.

Mini-FIRE Approaches to Early Retirement

If you prefer more of a mini-FIRE approach (or just want to test it out), you might consider the following other approaches:

  • Safety Cushion FIRE
  • Pay Off Some Debt FIRE
  • Pay Off All Debt FIRE
  • Savings FIRE
  • Mindful Spending FIRE
  • Traditional Investing FIRE
  • Traditional + Stock Investing FIRE

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter which FIRE approach you choose to pursue. What matters is that you choose the approach that fits you and your personal circumstances best, and aligns with your lifestyle goals.

Beyond the Numbers: Defining Your Ideal Early Retirement

As mentioned in “How to Calculate Your FIRE Number,” the 4% rule (or rule of 25) is a common guideline to determine your target retirement nest egg. This calculation is directly tied to your lifestyle goals.

To determine your FIRE number, you multiply your estimated annual expenses in retirement by 25. The more detailed and accurate your lifestyle goals, the more precise your FIRE number will be.

While understanding your FIRE number provides the financial framework, lifestyle goals paint the picture of your daily life post-work. Make sure you spend ample time reflecting on your priorities (as outlined with the questions and steps earlier).

You’ll need clear answers to these critical questions to ensure a successful early retirement.
