#222: How to Overcome the Motherhood Penalty in Your Career

#222: How to Overcome the Motherhood Penalty in Your Career –

There can be one difficult truth to face when you become a parent: the motherhood penalty.

It’s a frequently ignored subject in the corporate world, but there’s also an unspoken understanding that becoming a parent comes at some cost to your career.

That cost can be real in some professions, in others, it may have a minimal (or no) impact. Whether or not it impacts you is up to your choices.

In truth, you may discover that becoming a parent is worth the corporate cost. Perhaps you find a new perspective on life and your career becomes infinitely less important to you.

That’s the position I found myself in. Once, I dreamed of climbing the corporate ladder and becoming very successful in traditional roles. When I became a parent, that no longer mattered to me.

Instead, I favored roles that granted greater flexibility so I could spend more time with my family. I began to explore side hustles that would give me even greater freedom, so that I could gain the security of choice.

That freedom has allowed me to lean in and out of my “traditional” career when it suited me. While my journey isn’t over, I’m grateful for the freedom I have gained, and I’m determined to arm you with the same tools.

Drawing from my experience overcoming the motherhood penalty, this article shares actionable tools to help you reclaim freedom in your own career and life. Together, we’ll explore how to thoughtfully advocate for yourself, leverage your unique strengths, and rewrite the narrative on your terms.

#221: How to Set Professional Development Goals for Work Life Balance

#221: How to Set Professional Development Goals for Work Life Balance –

Do you know anyone who actually enjoys setting professional development goals for work? It’s an annual activity that is understandably dreaded by many.

Thankfully, we aren’t talking about work goals in the traditional sense. Rather, we’re going to talk about your professional goals for work-life balance.

When it comes to building a life on your terms, your career should be the engine propelling you toward financial freedom, not a cage that keeps you from it.

So how can you set meaningful goals as you build a path toward FIRE (financial independence, retire early) while keeping work-life balance in mind? What if the journey itself could be more harmonious?

The key lies in how you approach your own personal growth. When you learn to set professional development goals for work that prioritize balance, you stop trading your life for a paycheck and start designing a career that supports your soul.

When you pursue FIRE, it’s easy to focus on the “retire early” part or aggressive savings, so that you can retire as early as possible. But that’s also a great way to burn out.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t aggressively save, or that you shouldn’t work hard. Those are all valuable qualities. However, it’s also important to find balance in that, too.

In this article, we’ll explore the intentional ways you can set professional development goals to bring better harmony to your work-life balance.
