Do you know if you have an empowered money mindset? Whether or not you’re aware, you have a core set of beliefs about money. Some of your beliefs may support an empowered money mindset, but others may not.

Your money mindset can help or hinder your journey to financial freedom, but unless you’re deeply in-tune with your beliefs around money, it may not be clear in what ways.

Uncovering Core Beliefs

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t fully understand your beliefs about money. That certainly was me when I started my journey to financial freedom, and there’s no shame, wherever you are.

However, unless you’ve already invested significant time in uncovering your money mindset, I strongly encourage you to spend some time here. You might surprise yourself.

Money can be a source of stress and anxiety for many people. However, I also believe that your mindset plays a crucial role in helping you achieve financial well-being. In fact, I’d say that an empowered mindset can be the very key to unlocking financial freedom.

I discuss this topic with Lynn, host of the podcast Conversations About Power. You can check out the full episode below.

#172 Do You Have an Empowered Money Mindset

Understanding the Empowered Money Mindset

So, what exactly is an empowered money mindset?

It’s essentially a set of beliefs and attitudes that enable you to make sound financial decisions. Ultimately, your financial decisions can enable you to take control of your financial future.

Your money mindset can either empower you or hold you back, depending on the deep-seated beliefs you have about money.

Chances are, you probably believe some things that are helping you move forward on your journey to financial freedom. But you might also have some beliefs that are holding you back in unexpected ways.

That was certainly true for me when I started my journey to financial freedom. I discovered deep beliefs that genuinely surprised me, but also empowered me when I became aware of them.

Let’s take a look at some empowered and disempowered money mindsets. We’ll start with the disempowered first.

(Dis)Empowered Money Mindsets and Money Myths

If you think you have it all figured out, you might just be right! However, if you find yourself falling into the following traps, your belief system might be working against you, at least in some ways.

  • Living at your means: Do you feel like you have just enough every month? Or even not enough? If so, you might be living at your means where you spend all or most of your income, leaving little for savings or investments.
  • Keeping up with the Joneses: If you feel pressured to buy the new car (or any other guilty pleasure) that your neighbor just bought, then you might have an inherent belief that you need to keep up or impress others.
  • Negative feelings about money: If you believe that money is inherently bad or that only bad / selfish people have it, then you might have an inherent belief that associates negativity with money. This one, although common, is problematic because you may chase money away in ways that are mysterious even to you.
  • The belief that you have to work extremely hard to make money: This is the belief trap that I frequently find myself falling into. This can lead to burnout and limit your ability to see other opportunities for generating income.
  • The myth of “hard work equals wealth”: Similar to the point above, you might believe that wealth will only come to you if you put more effort into your work and work longer hours. In truth, this can lead people taking advantage of you.

Understanding Your Belief System

Do any of these resonate with you? These are just some of the disempowering beliefs you may or may not have, but there are others too. Beliefs like these can hinder your progress toward your financial goals, so it’s important to be aware of them.

It’s completely normal to hold disempowering beliefs about money, and there’s no shame if any (or all) of these ring true for you. We all have to start somewhere.

Regardless, I encourage you to get curious about yourself. Why do you believe these things? Ask yourself: “Is this helping me achieve my goals? Or is this holding me back in some way?”

When you proactively address your belief system, you can take mindful action to drive yourself forward as you achieve your goals, sooner, faster.

Awareness is the first step, but it doesn’t end there.

Empowered Money Mindsets

Here are a few empowered beliefs about money that you may already have (or may want to adopt).

  • Money is abundant: This is the belief that money can come from anywhere at any time and that there is no limited supply of it.
  • Money comes from smart work, not hard work: This belief encourages you to use your mind to work smarter, not harder.
  • Money is a tool: You already understand that money can be used to buy what you want, but what if you could use it to earn more money or to live life on your terms? Imagine the possibilities.
  • Anyone (good or bad) can earn or have money: Remember that money isn’t selective, it can go to anyone, good or bad.
  • I am capable of earning as much money as I want: With this belief, you open your mind to the realm of possibilities – in your career, with a business, in investments, or in just about any other means you can imagine.

You probably have a mix of disempowered and empowered money mindsets, which is completely normal, but challenge yourself to uncover your deep-seated beliefs. Then ask yourself: “Which of these are serving me, and which are getting in the way of my goals?”

Shifting Towards an Empowered Money Mindset

The good news is that it’s possible to cultivate an empowered money mindset. You can get started today with just a few simple strategies:

  • Practice self-awareness: Start by identifying your current beliefs about money. You might consider meditation, counseling/coaching, a mindful walk, or reading a book to help you uncover your beliefs.

Psst… a few of my favorite books that cover money belief systems are You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero and The Audacity to be Queen by Gina DeVee.

  • Challenge limiting beliefs: Question the validity of beliefs that don’t serve you and your goals. You will likely find there is (or was) some truth to disempowering beliefs, but if they aren’t serving you today challenge them! Build a set of habits that cultivate awareness and support empowering beliefs.
  • Make conscious choices: Align your spending and saving habits with your financial goals and empowered belief system.
  • Focus on empowerment: Embrace the idea that money is a tool that can provide you with choices and freedom.

The journey to mindfulness and an empowered money mindset is continuous. It’s one that will require attention and refocus over time, especially as you work towards challenging limiting beliefs.

I still find myself challenging limiting beliefs that sneak up – the belief that I have to work hard for money is one that frequently returns. But I’ve also established a set of habits and boundaries that have helped me cultivate awareness and build an empowering belief system.

Financial freedom, and the ability to live on my terms is worth it to me. Is it worth it to you?
