My journey to FIRE (financial independence, retire early) began years ago, but I still dream of becoming a “mad fientist.” Or in other words, someone that achieves financial freedom and FIRE retirement.
It’s motivating to imagine what kind of lifestyle is possible with FIRE. I envision spending more time with family, enjoying the beach, traveling, playing with my kids, enjoying yoga, and other self-care activities.
You may also dream of achieving FIRE retirement, and if so, you may want to consider activities you’ll pursue when you reach your goals.
I’ll be honest, I hadn’t considered what I would do when I became a mad fientist, at least not until the last year or so.
It’s hard to envision the possibilities when you’re neck deep in a busy career, especially when you have little kids that rely heavily on you.
Even so, it’s important to put thought into your dreams for the future and to reflect on why pursuing a FIRE lifestyle matters to you. It isn’t an easy journey, but it can be worth it, especially when you spend time reflecting on what you’ll do when you achieve your FIRE goals.
In this article, I’m going to share 10 activities I plan on enjoying when I become a mad fientist.
10 Activities I’ll Enjoy as a Mad Fientist
Have you reflected on what it means to you to achieve a FIRE lifestyle? If not, perhaps you’ll find some inspiration in some of the ways I plan on enjoying a FIRE retirement as a mad fientist.
Being more in the moment with my kids
It’s important to me to take the time to enjoy activities – big and small – with my children.
I know they’ll only be little for so long, and I want to remember the time I took my kids to the science museum or the zoo. Or even remember the silly dance routine we made up at home.
While I’m still focused on finding that balance between building a FIRE runway and spending time with my children, I look forward to simply being able to focus more on the latter.
Adventuring with my partner
I’m an adventurous spirit at heart, and I dream of finding adventures in various activities with my partner.
It could be simple adventures, like doing an escape room, or even something more complex like a Mediterranean Cruise. Whatever adventure we choose, I want to enjoy it in the company of my partner.
Traveling
Traveling is one adventure that I’d like to enjoy more with my children and my partner. I want to share the world with them and experience new cultures together.
I’d like to teach my children about the world around us, and how amazing other cultures are. Similarly, I want to experience something new for the first time with my partner.
My dreams of travel adventures have always been high on my list of priorities, and I expect it always will.
Spending time with family and friends
It’s not only important to spend time with my children and partner, but I want to spend more time with my other loved ones as well.
I have older relatives that I know will only be around for so much longer, and I want to appreciate each of the moments we have left together.
Similarly, it’s important that I enjoy the company of my friends. Sometimes I look forward to nothing more than just a girl’s night out.
Relaxing self-care activities
A lot of my dreams for the future are centered around spending time with my loved ones, but that’s not all that matters to me.
Sometimes there’s nothing I need more than some quiet time to meditate or read.
Active self-care activities
Some of my more active self-care activities include running and yoga. It’s important to me that I have the time I need to take care of myself mentally, spiritually, AND physically.
A yoga practice or a nice run can do wonders for my mindset.
Personal ambitions (mad fientist 2.0?)
Regardless of when or how I retire, I don’t imagine ever being able to turn off my drive to make a positive impact.
I imagine I will always want to continue a business of some sort, though I may choose to slow my work down over time.
Volunteering
My personal ambitions matter, but I’d also like to volunteer my time to a good cause. I’d like to help shelter animals or find another way to serve my community.
Networking (with other mad fientists and beyond!)
I enjoy meeting people from various walks of life, so I envision myself expanding my network even further.
It’s amazing how unique and different people can be, and I enjoy conversations with people that have different perspectives on life (yes, even political).
Learning (mad fientist 2.x??)
I’ve always enjoyed learning (yes, I was that nerd in high school). I don’t ever see myself being done with learning, so I might take up new courses, or find other ways to learn new things.
It’s my dream to someday become fluent in French, Spanish, and German (along with English). I have ok proficiency in French, but hardly any in Spanish or German. I’d like to focus on enhancing my language skills, which would serve me well in my travel adventures.
Oddly enough, I could also see myself taking law courses. Not because I want to be a lawyer (definitely not for me), but because I’d like to become better versed in how the law works.
There’s always something new and interesting that I’ve found to learn, so I’ll undoubtedly uncover something else of interest in the future.
