How a Career-Driven Mom Like You Can Find a Job You’re Passionate About

As a career-driven mom myself, I understand how difficult it is to find a healthy balance between work and home life. It’s a constant struggle, which is why it’s so important to find a career that is not only rewarding but also fits your lifestyle needs.

It starts with finding something you’re passionate about first, so here are some tips for finding a job that fulfills you:

Take an inventory of your interests and strengths.

What are you actually passionate about? What do you enjoy doing? What are you good at?

Do you enjoy helping people? If so, a career in healthcare could be a good fit.

Are you highly analytical? If so, you might consider a career in data analysis or science.

List out some of your key interests and strengths and reflect on your list as you consider career fields.

Once you know what you’re interested in, you can start to narrow down your search and identify a field of interest.

Psst… If you need some help identifying your innate strengths, I recommend reading Strengths Finder, which comes with a free quiz when you buy the book new!

Do your research.

Once you’ve narrowed in on your interests and strengths, it’s time for research.

Consider any career fields that interest you and research the characteristics of the jobs on your list. Learn about the day-to-day life, benefits, and anything else that’s important to you.

Talk to people who work in the field, read online articles, and visit company websites. The more you know about the field, the better equipped you’ll be to make an informed decision about which career to pursue.

Network.

Networking is a great way to find a job you’re passionate about. Talk to your friends, family, and colleagues about your job search. They may know of openings that aren’t advertised. You can also attend industry events and meet new people.

Don’t be afraid to start your own business.

If you can’t find a job that you’re passionate about, you can always start your own business. This is a great way to be your own boss and work on something that you’re truly passionate about.

Personally, I’ve learned considerably more as I built my own business than I ever did in some full-time jobs.

Finding a job you’re passionate about can be tough, but it’s worth it. When you love your job, it shows in every aspect of your life. You’ll be more productive, you’ll be happier, and you’ll be a better mom.

5 Tips to Help Career-Driven Moms Build a Successful Career

Finding a balance between your career and family is key to success, but it’s far easier to say and much harder to execute.

Here are 5 tips to help career-driven moms like you secure a healthy balance and build a successful career:

1. Set boundaries.

While it might be difficult, it’s incredibly important to set boundaries between your work life and your home life. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

You don’t need to say yes to every extra assignment, nor do you need to help every coworker. Understand your limits and don’t be afraid to speak up about them.

Admittedly this is the one area that I struggled with the most, but I was immensely happier when I set healthy boundaries.

2. Delegate.

Moms are used to doing it all, but burnout will come quickly the more you try to do so.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you have a partner, family members, or friends who are willing to help out, take them up on it.

3. Take care of yourself.

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising. Taking care of yourself will help you be more productive and happy.

Again, easier said than done, especially when you have so many people relying on you. But if you don’t take care of yourself first then you’ll have nothing else to give to everyone else that needs you (I’ve learned this the hard way).

4. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself.

This point is closely related to #1 and #3 above, but if you’re a people pleaser like myself, then you may have a hard time advocating for yourself.

Unfortunately, you will likely run into people that will take advantage (even your own family), so don’t be afraid to speak up in your own defense. No one deserves to be a doormat, least of all a hard-working career-driven mom like yourself!

5. Dare to make changes if your life is out of balance.

It’s constant work to maintain a healthy balance, and at times you may find out that your life is out of balance, whether it’s due to high family demands or career demands. If you find that you’re constantly stressed and overwhelmed, then it may be time to make a change.

Don’t be afraid to act when you find yourself getting to this point- you’ll thank yourself later for making the change you needed.

Being a career-driven mom is a challenge, but it’s also an amazing opportunity. By following these tips, you can find a job you’re passionate about and find a healthy balance between your career and family life
